Well, hes moved. And let me tell you, that guy had a lot of crap. I knew the guy was a pack rat, but I never fully realized exactly how much stuff he had in that tiny little house. Moving the contents of his house, garage and shed from their original locations to the U-Haul and two pods was like watching a marshmallow expand in a fire, or when a magician pulls that scarf out of his sleeve. All I can figure is that his old house was somehow like a space bag, and mysteriously shrunk shit enough to fit into the little nooks and crannies in the place.
One of the first things we moved was the boat, and Im pleased to report that it survived the trip without incident, despite the fact that the internal framing isnt even completed -- almost four years later! (Yes, weve been at this for almost four years, and were still not done!)
The new garage is even cooler than the old one... bigger, warmer, brighter, and it has running water and drains built into the floor. Unfortunately, Greg is currently using the garage and the hull of the boat as an overflow area for stuff while he gets the new house situated. This means no boat work for at least a month or so. The crazy thing is, I already miss our boat/beer/cigar/guy talk time, and Im looking forward to getting back at it.
In order for that to happen though, Greg needs to organize the garage, which means that he needs to put up shelves and so forth. Hes tentatively planning to do that between Christmas and New Years day, and Ill probably help.

Youre familiar already about my ? for Antonio Marras...
and he loves hearts.
Just like I do.
Needless to say that when I saw on Yoox.com the light merino wool knit with tiny stuffed hearts I couldnt resist making my own summer version.

I had everything in my stash (because my stash is HUMONGOUS)
- grey grosgrain ribbon
- grey faceted (plastic) beads
- pearls beads
- some heart charms
- gray & white t-shirt scraps
- stuffing
- swarovski sew on crystals
- two D rings and chain
- one eyelet
- strong thread & needle
- safety pins (so I can take it on ad off and wash my shirt without going nut)
--> HOW TO:
- thread 5 strands in different lengths with the beads and the pearls, changing pattern in each strand
- attach all the 5 strands and the chain to one of the D ring
- attach only one strand and the chain to the other D ring
- punch the eyelet on one side of a 18" long grosgrain and fray-check both sides
- attach the other strands (while tangling them a little) to the eyelet
- sew about 25" of grosgrain ribbon on the flat part of both D rings
- fold the 18" piece of grosgrain leaving one part about 2" longer
- sew the folded part of the grosgrain at about 3" from the D ring (pin first and try on your shirt to make sure it fits as desired)
To make the hearts, cut the hearts in three different sizes:
2 medium grey - 2" wide x 1-1/4" tall
2 light grey - 1-1/2" wide x 1" tall
1 white - 1-1/2" wide x 2" tall
and follow my tutorial here for the sewing and stuffing
I sewed on the swarovski crystals on the light grey hearts, and sewed all the hearts on the strands as they were charms.
Pin both sides on the shoulder seams of the shirt and tie a bow in the back and the trick is done!
Best part... I can take it off and use it on a sweater for the fall... this is my take on
"transitional refashion"!

We are finally breaking out of sanding and fairing hell! Last night Greg and I did a final round of sanding on the bottom and the starboard side, using 120 grit sandpaper, and applied a coat of primer to the areas we sanded. Over the next week or two we will finish sanding and applying the first coat of primer.
Those of you who have been stuck in sanding and fairing hell can appreciate how happy we are over hitting this milestone. But considering how long weve been doing this -- roughly two years now -- this accomplishment is especially sweet. Since I rode my bike over to Gregs house, I didnt bring the camera so once again I dont have any pictures yet, but I think Im going to wait until the boat is completely primed.
I still cant describe how gratifying it is to be coming out of hell.

I did this first coat in the garage, and then picked it up and took it outside on a nice sunny day to see if I could get the epoxy to cure a little quicker. My technique was to use a plastic spreader to spread the epoxy. 1st coat sucked it right up, the second coat (applied today) used very little more glass to fill almost to the top of the weave. Tyvek coverals ($10 at Lowes) are essential, as well as nitrile gloves. Clean up of exposed skin parts is done with white vinegar, and soap. No harsh chemicals to drive into skin. 
The transom will get a haircut tomorrow morning. I hope that the Easter Bunny will let me do a little sanding prior to church. Looking at a couple hours of sanding with the random orbit and 60 grit. 
Boat will get one more coat of epoxy after the sanding. Then will add the skeg. Will trim the stem later. 
The flat spot on the chine bugs me. Should have fixed it when I had the chance. I was aiming for a 5 footer (looks good up close), guess I will have to settle for a 20 footer. The good news is that this boat still is very easy to pick up and walk around the yard. I am really looking forward to my first row in this skiff.

Put on 3" glass tape on all seams, set in epoxy. Sanding took 30 minutes with the random orbit sander connected to the shopvac. I hope to be able to move to the interior next week. My current thinking is a coat of 2 oz glass to protect the wood from dings. Still painting it however, I have decided against the clear coat. Still should look pretty cool. The transom will remain clear, as I plan to try some gold leaf technique here.

Thats not really a phrase that applies in our situation, but it sounded good nonetheless. Greg and I are still working on the boat, and we are still taking our time. The inside of the hull has been glassed, and we have test-fitted the stringers and frame pieces. Next weeek, we plan to tack the stringers into place, and then after that, it will be time to secure the stringers and frame pieces to the hull.
Greg also purchased a trailer last weekend. It looks nice, but Greg says that hell have to make some minor adjustmenst to it.

This is a valid point, and one that I honestly hadnt considered. But even if I had, this boat actually belongs to my friend Greg, so I didnt have much input on which plans were actually purchased. Im just the first mate. (Call me Gilligan.) Now that the point is brought up though, heres my take.
Youre absolutely correct, this is a flat-bottomed boat. The result is that it will probably rock-n-roll a little more in choppy water, but I wouldnt worry about that a whole lot. Its going to be a big, heavy boat, so I suspect that itll take quite a bit to make the boat roll excessively. As far as the wind goes, I dont think itll be a huge factor. The rear transom isnt much different from your standard power boat, so I suspect the amount of surface area that the wind could catch is probably comparable to a standard displacement hull. The front transom is relatively small, so I dont see wind as a factor here either, and the same goes for the sides. Besides, its not like were rowing this big-ass boat. Gregs going to put in a couple of big motors to do the work for us.
In short, the only way I see wind being a factor is when the wind causes waves on the water, in which case the boat will probably rock a bit more than a displacement hulled boat.
