Filleting

Front Transom - Inside - 2

In this picture, we are filleting the gap between the hull and front transom. In the picture you will notice the large gap filled with thickened epoxy. You see the stringer in the left-top of the picture, and you see that the stringer is covered with plastic, in order to prevent the stringer from sticking to the transom or hull during the epoxying process.

Additions to the Blog Roll

Id like to welcome two new additions to the blog roll. Eric is building Nina, an LB22 model, designed my the folks over at Bateau -- the same crew that designed the boat Greg and I are building.

Ben is building his boat in The Invisible Workshop which, in his words, is "a nomadic, exterior boatbuilding space."

If youre discouraged from building a boat because of the slow rate of progress that Greg and I display, please check out these blogs. They certainly demonstrate that a boat doesnt need to be built over a two-plus year period. The second blog also shows that you dont need an elaborate workspace to achieve your dream.

Flipped Out!

We got the boat flipped, but it was a day where everything that could go wrong, did. Okay, not quite "everything." Nobody was hurt, and the boat is still in one piece. But it did take five guys four hours to get her rolled.

Ive been waiting to roll this boat for years... literally! Weve been sanding and fairing for so long that I dont remember what its like to not be in sanding and fairing hell. Now, after years of making the boat look right, we can continue the structural and functional construction.

18 Bolger Work Skiff

wow...I should have started this blog earlier.  But here goes...

This month I learned a couple of things regarding dos and donts. 

1.  Dont put polyurethane over fresh epoxy.  The amine blush will prevent the polyurethane from ever setting up resulting in a very gummy mess.  It took most of the month to scrape and bring all the varnished surfaces back to the glass and wood.  Traditional spar varnish works great, and I will also add smells better than polyurethane. 

2.  The premise of building this skiff was to replace the Bolger Diablo that had gone to the Viking funeral two years ago.  Lessons learned included using better wood and glassing both the inside and outside for easier maintenance.  Granted the Diablo cost me under $1000 to build and the grand total for the Work skiff is around $3000.  There is a LOT more wood and glass in this boat despite it only being 2 longer. 

Additionally, I had planned to use the same motor, a 9.9hp 1990 Johnson motor.  The mice in the shed had other plans.  I took the motor to the shop for a tune up two weeks ago and the mechanic declared the motor dead.  Mice had taken up residence in the intake and carburator and additionally the motor was not holding compression as one of the cylinders was leaking. They had built nests and deficated on everything, and eatin the wiring harness.  After a cleaning, the motor still would not hold compression (bad rings?).  At 20 + years the motor served me well and I will now replace it with a more recent 9.9.  (The Horsepower limit on my local lake is 10 HP hence the motor choice).  Even if I fixed the motor, I would not trust it.  I will investigate more HP next year as I still need to get a trailer as well.  IN retrospect, I would have chosen a different design had I known the motor was shot.

Reverse Rockabilly

Have you ever had one of those ideas that you have to do, even though you have almost no time, and in that time, you should probably be doing something else?  I had one of those today. It, in a way, is kind of a throwback to one of my designs I did for Cosmoprof 2010 (yes, last years Cosmoprof!) The design was called Between a Rockabilly and a Hard Place, and it was a leopard print nail with a red moon. Today, for some reason, it struck me to try the reverse of that design. In my mind, it was something that was a tad more subtle than the full-on leopard print, perhaps even a tad more office-friendly?  In any event, it was awesome in my head, and pretty much the only way Ill wear red. I have to admit, I love it. I keep looking at my hands. lol  I hope you like it too!! I also got to use Zoya Carmen, which I got to try at Cosmoprof this year! Its a really great true red. Very fiery and retro.

I used Zoya Carmen as a base, with American Apparel California Trooper for the moon. For the leopard pattern, I used OPI San Tan-tonio for the tan blobs, and American Apparel Raccoon for the darker brown. Topped everything off with Nubar Diamont top coat,  which I was given as a free gift with purchase at IBS 2011.
